20-Year-Old College Student Dies Taking a Photo at Ozark National Forest

Twenty-year-old Andrea Norton was hiking through the Ozark National Forest on April 14 when she stopped to take a photo with her cell phone and fell to her death, according to CNN.

Norton was on a school trip with classmates from Briar Cliff University when the accident occurred, CNN reports. The group had stopped at Hawksbill Crag, a widely visited destination within the forest popular for taking photos, according to CBS News. When she repositioned for a photo, she slipped and fell 100 feet off the cliff, and died of injuries sustained in the fall, Newton County sheriff Glenn Wheeler told the network.

Wheeler also told CBS News that “several” people have fallen to their deaths at Hawksbill Crag in recent years.

Norton was in her third year at Briar Cliff, where she was pursuing a triple-major in biology, environmental science, and global studies, according to her obituary.

“Her trust in God is what led her to pursue a career in environmental studies and preserving His creation,” reads her obituary.

In addition to her school work, Norton interned at the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Conservatory in Sioux City, researched triple-negative breast cancer at Sanford Research, and she was set to go to Central Michigan University to study aquatic ecology as part of her next internship, according to her obituary.

“Andrea was a passionate environmental science major, exemplary student, and dedicated athlete,” Briar Cliff University posted on Facebook. “She lived BCU’s values in everything she did, from the classroom to the court and everywhere she went.”

It’s not clear if Norton’s death is a selfie-related fatality, which are on the rise among young people. According to a study published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care, there were 259 deaths between October 2011 and November 2017 that occurred while the victim was clicking selfies. Per the report, the mean age of victims in this type of death was 22.94 years old.

Also on April 14, a senior at Fordham University in New York City died while attempting to take a photo atop the university’s clock tower, according to CBS New York.
